PalmPilot Creators Decamp 3Com
Wired News Report
12:50pm 7.Jul.98.PDT
Jeff Hawkins and Donna Dubinsky, creators of the
popular PalmPilot handheld computer, are leaving
3Com at the end of the week to start a company
that will make similar devices, The Wall Street
Journal reported.
Hawkins, who invented the original PalmPilot,
and Dubinsky, who had been running the Palm
Computing unit within 3Com, said they plan to
make a consumer-oriented handheld computer,
possibly to be based on the PalmPilot's
technology.
The pair leave 3Com at a time when the PalmPilot
is facing more competition. A slew of devices
based on Microsoft's Windows CE operating system
software has been introduced in the past year.
Dubinsky and 3Com (COMS) told the Journal that
the departure is amicable. Dubinsky said she
wanted to run a small company again.
So far, Hawkins and Dubinsky have no cash, no
product designs and no name for their new
venture. They plan to take off the rest of the
summer to brainstorm.
