an easier way? (request for advice)

hello, i am a college student with a very specific problem. i am in the
process of creating a plan of study for my next semester, and am researching
the plausibility of a study on the effects of wearable computing on a persons
life, relationships, and psyche. in this study i would build a wearable
computer, and with it stay connected to the internet, and my college at all
waking hours (the college i attend is online). the difficulty which i have
come up against is that due to my limited income as a student i cannot afford
to connect using cellular service for that many hours per day (16). therefor
i have come to the conclusion that the only other form of connection would be
to use radio signals sent in between a base and the wearable, with the base
being connected to a phone line. this is possible using four radios, 1
transmitter at each end and 1 receiver at each end, but due to the amount
that they would weigh, and their power consumption, it is not a plausible
solution. So, my question to you would be whether anyone else has used a
similar method of connecting wearables, or if anyone knows of a technology
that allows synchronous reception and transmission of data over the air.
many thanks for your patience and help.
