Actually, if you look at IBM's web site and look at their Speech Technology (which, by the way, is considered the best or near best in the industry), you will see that they are involved in the effort to create the Java Speech API, and do provide the ability to develop for the API. Also, you may notice from their site that their development kit is the only one which is completely free, only requiring the purchase of some version of ViaVoice '98. In terms of the keyboard, keep in mind that IBM did include a USB port. Although there are not a whole lot of devices available, it seems to me that they did take flexibility into account.
