The ccd element used in some digital cameras (like the b/w quickcam) is
sensative to IR light and has an IR blocking filter to compensate for
it. You can pop out the filter and add an IR flashlight to get night
vision with the cameras (assuming you have some way to walk around with
the camera(like maybe a portable)).
