GPS and WWW

The idea of using a GPS as a location sensor for a wearable has been around
for a while now. I'm wondering how much information is out there on the web
that is indexed by geographical location and that could be accessed by a
wearable with a GPS, a wireless modem, and a web browser.
Examples of useful information include maps, current events, descriptions of
buildings, places and regions (hotels, restaurants, ...) etc. etc.
Especially interesting - but probably non-existing - would be a translation
from street addresses into GPS locations or vice versa.
I'm trying to compile a list of publicly accessible web sites that provide
this kind of information.
Anyone know about such sites?
