I was thinking of a rocker button operated by the thumb to move backwards or forwards (with accelerating speed and abbreviated sounds as appropriate). I realise it sounds pretty ancient, but I believe that with practice the morse bit would be transparent and it has the advantages of being easy to implement, easy to hear through noise on the street, and allow a very compact (I hope) design with minimal hardware....
