I use gel-cells since I can easily charge them in the field.
(I have a voltmeter on the power line to monitor operating voltage)
I'd love to use Li-Ion for weight/capacity, but AFAIK these require
a microcontroller to charge them else they get killed.
I want to use one set that is field-recheargeable and not have to
keep a second set in a charger base at home/office.
I could homebrew a Li-Ion charger with the appropriate charger chip, but
are there some Li-Ion batteries that have such smarts built-in?

Awww...but '70s overkill engineering is fun...;)
and think of the uptime or additionnal peripherals one can use
with such massive packs.
BTW: how much do those things go for typically?
