BenchMarq, National and Maxim make such charger chips, others probably
as well.  Usually surface mount IC's, they can be small <G>  Another
thing to consider are the laptop "emergency backup battery" chips - they
give you higher voltage off a smaller battery, for while you're changing
batteries (could use a very small NiMH pack for this.)

(I'm looking at faster charging of gel cells, any good URL for that?)

You can get a lot of AH for little money;  4.5 AH for $7ish on sale,
pretty often;  17 AH for $42 or less;  etc.  Look for bargains, on
these.  $2/AH is about the right rate to beat, lower than that is
better.
