we started with the 6811, but moved toward the pic.

one drawback of the PIC is that gplab doesn't support all PICs, so sometimes
we needed to use a virus (virus95 or virus98) to program the PIC
(mplab runs on top of virus95 or virus98).

we're moving to avr, but would be interested in
comparing notes on gpl (e.g. nonviral) tools available for programming
avr.  of the 50 wearcomps we're using, we've devirused all but 2 or 3
of them.  the ones not devirused are specifically for programming PICs
and such, but we'd like to devirus these as well, for a complete
lab-wide (completely clean environment). 

perhaps we can compare notes on gpl programming environments for avr.
