I was just about to >sell my low-speed Ricochet modem, but it looks like you can't buy new >low-speed service any more. yeah, imho they're shooting themselves in the foot. but whatever. I have not used the new 128k hardware, but I have used the old modems (original ribbed long cigarette carton modem) on the new network (beta test) and I was up from 2-3kb/sec downloads to 4-5kb/sec, and others were reporting higher upto 6kb/sec. 6kB * 8Byte = 48kbit, not bad. I did not test upload speed, only download. Latency was way down, too. from the average 400-700-1000ms, down to 200 or so. comparable to 14.4 modems, from what I remember. Packet loss was also 0, compared to the current ~10%. However, that may be due to the low # of actual users. This is a huge improvement over the current network. No idea when it's actually going public. I vaguely remember they said june/july, but july is here, and ricochet has never had a good reputation for schedules. My personal estimation is mid-to-late fall. The sooner the better. - Kevin -- Subcription/unsubscription/info requests: send e-mail with subject of "subscribe", "unsubscribe", or "info" to
