Hi! Now that I've got a Toshiba notebook, I was thinking about having it in a backpack, maybe together with some extra source of power. Now, as I can't really afford too much, I'm planning to use sound for output and a mike + a handheld device for input. I've already developed a damn simple way of doing the hand input. By using a five-key input device I developed a year ago or so, I can input up to 31 different combinations. With a few weeks of training, I should be able to type quite fast. Especially if I write the software smart enough. This is my idea: When I type a character, it's pronounced to me in the ear plug so I can keep track of my typing. When I hit space, the resulting word/acronym/etc is looked up in a database of single-word low-quality recordings (for the sake of disk capacity and search time). If the word isn't found, I'm asked to add it to the database by holding in one of the keys while pronouncing it. When that's done with, I can continue typing the next word. After using this system for quite a while, I should have the most used parts of my vocabulary on disk, and the top 100 or so words in memory... If I want to read my mail, the computer will look up all the words in the messages, and play them back for me. It won't sound good, but it'll work. I could also ask the computer to read the current paragraph for me. The reason I want to do it this way is: There are currently no Norwegian speech synthesizers available for free. And it's easier to implement. =) Of course, everything won't be looked up in a word database. Some phrases and error messages will be pre-recorded. =) Thor -- Subcription/unsubscription/info requests: send e-mail with subject of "subscribe", "unsubscribe", or "info" toWear-Hard Mailing List Archive (searchable): http://wearables.blu.org
