Re: Five key chording keyboards (BAT, Microwriter, etc).

ive been intriuged by the so called "quick entry" mode on my Mitsubishi
t250 WAP phone and can't help but wonder if something like it couldn't
work even better on a wearable.
For those of you who aren't familiar with this entry mode (I think its
available on sever of the new WAP phones). Essentially you have the
typical 12 key phone keypad where:
	2 = a|b|c
	3 = d|e|f
	4 = g|h|i
	5 = j|k|l
	6 = m|n|o
	7 = p|q|r|s
	8 = t|u|v
	9 = w|x|y|z

to type a word like CAT in quick entry mode you would simply type 2-2-8
and the word 'BAT' or 'CAT' might appear (or the prefix to a much longer
word) you can scroll through the possible matches with the 0 key, so if
it came up BAT and you wanted CAT you could just key 0 until you see CAT.
I assume whats happening is there is an internal dictionary with numerical
entries associated with any given word and it basicly just narrows down
the possible words based on the numbers you press. It seems pretty
straight foreward. They keypad on this particualr phone uses 1 for
symbols * for shift and # for space. If you can't get the word that you
want out of quick entry mode you can use a so-called soft-key to change
the input mode to typical alpha phone entry (CAT would be 2-2-#-2-8). I
haven't yet found a way to add words to the internal phone dictionary, nor
do I expect to, however with the less restrained storage space of a
typical wearable, its definatly a feature that could be added quite
easily.

Theoretically a 10-key keyboard attachment like the ones found
(http://www.genovation.com/computer/index.html) could do the job quite
well. The AddPoint 628 (17-key combo keypad/touchPad) looks quite
interesting as it contains a touchpad as well. I suppose one could be
hacked with some effort into a more "ergonomic" configuration. 17 keys
are more than enough really. If the standard phone layout was used and
say . and + were subbed for # and * respectivly, enter could be well enter
and ht top row (numlock, /, *, -) could be used for the modes (quick,
alpha, numeric, symbol) or one key could be a toggle and the others can be
assigned to other useful things.

just thinking outloud
