Tried a similar thing with a permenant magnet on the finger and a
Honeywell HMC2003 sensor - www.magneticsensors.com. Range was roughly 6cm
or so - I somehow believe the range could be extended. PIC to sample the 3
analog outputs and a maxim202 for the serial port level  conversion. On
the PC end, a kalman filter to track the output and a function that would
feed in the predicted values out of the filter as the new mouse pointer
location. 

Let me know if you are interested in the details, there should be a 2-page
note on it somewhere..
