Check out SVGATextMode. It is most likly in your red hat distribution. Using this I have from 80 to 50 char. width screen modes I use with my M1. I use 64 char the most these days. You will need to modify the TextConfig file for use with the M1. I have posted my mods here in the past (search the archive for SVGATextMode) and they may work for you - I have received mixed reports of succsess from folks using them with vga chipsets other than the ones I wrote and tested them under.
