The modem blazed through our roving cafe test in San Francisco and was
always able to connect to the Ricochet network. Bay Area coverage is
highly reliable, delivering service in some places where we couldn't even
get a connection on a PCS cell phone. Using our own Bandwidth Meter, CNET
Labs tested the modem with a USB interface on a notebook running Windows
98 and found that although the connection dropped to 20 kbps in a few
locations, it was always available and generally clocked in between 110
and 140 kbps. This makes Ricochet comparable to an ISDN connection--fast
enough to transfer packet video over the Web, albeit with occasional
hiccups.
