I'm using the Qualcomm 860 with my pilot and laptop over
bellatlantic's network. It is the same basic approach. The phone acts as
a hayes compatible modem when used via the connection cable (via CDPD).
FWIW, the Qualcomm phone is also cheaper, but bigger, than the motorola.
I've found that to some modems, especially over a noisy network,
won't connect to this phone over 300 baud. That is probably what you are
seeing. This modem is much more sensitive to line noisy than a typical
landline modem.
