Hi Seth,

ok, I understand that we are in the Hayes world ;)
thanks!

I talked to Bell-Atlanatic mobile (BAM), and they said I actually have a
Star Tac 7860, which CAN use the simple cable for wireless digital data
service (using the modem internal to the phone). YEAH!

what's next:

- I have to decide whether to use my Star Tac 7860 ($250!) and cable
($120) or trade in before 15 days and use the Qualcomm 860 (~$100) w/ cable
($80). I guess Qualcomm might be better, since they invented CDMA!

- getting my linux box to be able to talk to the phone.
from the BAM techie, I think I can use the Hayes AT command set
over the serial port, which doesn't require any special programming.
The authentication is some flavor of CHAP, he didn't know which one.
I might have to call 3COM on that since they are the OS on the server
  behind it all ;)
  anyone know this info ?

this is not like CDPD where you are just ON all the time. you have to
dial into an ISP, either bell atlantic (the number is #777) or any other
favorite ISP.

only 14.4... darn, when is the 3GHz standard coming out ?!?!

So Seth, are you dialing into the BAM internet dialup?

can you post what your set-up is, incl. the AT commands
and the authentication protocol needed (if any)?

thanks!!!!!!!
Prashant
