The minstrel or CDPD services are faster, but the unit is *MUCH*
more expensive (300$), specific to only one device (I'd need two units and
two service plans, one for the pilot and one for the laptop) and the
service is more expensive.
The reason I went with the qualcom 860 is :

1. I need a cell phone
2. I need to hook up to both the pilot and the laptop
3. the service is a 10$ add on to my cell plan, not an additional=20
40$/month=20
4. it feeds off my already existing cell phone minutes (and I have free
nights and weekends)

The advantages of the CDPD service over the phone :

1. it is faster
2. it is always on
3. it connects directly to the device, no cables to run.
