I didn't bother configuring the drive in BIOS, because it should 
be smart enough to fin the drive if set to "auto detect"

Yes. What I did was use a floppy disk with the "bootnet.img" (redhat 
install from network disk) and it worked fine. I have the redhat 
distro on web server so I did an install over HTTP and it worked 
fine. I will be switching to Slackware however. I will try booting 
into setup (BIOS) and see if mine recognizes the microdrive ...
