I'm unsure whether they're DRam or SRam, probably DRam as it's far cheaper! As DRam eats just enough more power compared to SRam, battery backing it isn't going to be do-able (you'd have to refresh the DRam regularly - it's not all THAT much power, but the chips to do the refresh would have to be added in there, AND the battery - and a coin cell wouldn't last beyond a day or so I think for that) - Probably not worth the effort to think about it, sadly. (DRam has a little cheap capacitor per memory cell - you charge or discharge that capacitor to set a 0 or 1 there - then the capacitor leaks slowly, so you have to come back regularly and refresh it i.e. read the 0 or 1 and write it back in there, before it's had a chance to decay to 0.5! SRam has a full gate circuit, that latches OFF for 0 or ON for 1, it's static CMOS and not having to change state at all - so it takes less power, it's more expensive of course, due to rarity and more complexity.
