I have been experimenting with a minimal slackware distribution on microdrive. I decided to go as small as possible and run with no swap partition and a bare bones linux runtime with just basic utils, networking, and emacs. The whole system is 106MB. Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/hdc1 1035756 105876 877264 11% / The PCMCIA adapter for microdrive came in very handy for doing the slackware install, since I could boot from my laptop drive, mount the microdrive in the pcmcia slot to partition & format then copy the slackware packages to the microdrive. After that all I had to do was swap the microdrive to the CF socket, boot from the slackware install floppy, and run the setup program (it allows you to specify install from local HDD). The minimal configuration looks like this (sizes listed are uncompressed): Base Linux System aaa_base.tgz 80 K Basic Linux filesystem bash.tgz 740 K GNU bash-2.04 bin.tgz 2050 K Binaries for /bin and /usr/bin bzip2.tgz 350 K bzip2 file compression cpio.tgz 200 K GNU cpio v. 2.4.2 cxxlibs.tgz 1510 K C++ shared libraries devs.tgz 1950 K /dev directory files e2fsprog.tgz 730 K e2fsprogs-1.19 ext2 file system elflibs.tgz 2000 K Assorted ELF shared libraries elvis.tgz 1330 K elvis-2.1_4 text editor etc.tgz 670 K /etc configuration files fileutls.tgz 1180 K GNU fileutils-4.0 find.tgz 150 K GNU findutils-4.1 floppy.tgz 700 K floppy disk utilities fsmods.tgz 1760 K Filesystem modules getty.tgz 150 K getty_ps 2.0.7j glibcso.tgz 1880 K GNU glibc-2.2 runtime gpm.tgz 520 K gpm-1.19.2 mouse server grep.tgz 530 K GNU grep 2.4.2 gzip.tgz 100 K GNU zip compression utilities hdsetup.tgz 740 K Slackware setup program ide.tgz 1050 K Linux kernel without SCSI infozip.tgz 580 K zip 2.3 and unzip 5.41 isapnp.tgz 190 K isapnptools-1.21 kbd.tgz 1760 K keyboard mappings utility ldso.tgz 470 K ld.so 1.9.9 dynamic linker less.tgz 150 K less-354 paginator libc5.tgz 2580 K libc5 ELF shared libraries libdb123.tgz 900 K Berkeley DB shared libraries lilo.tgz 580 K LILO 21.5.1 boot loader lpr.tgz 180 K lpr-0.48-1 printing suite man.tgz 290 K man-1.5h1 manual reader minicom.tgz 650 K Minicom 1.82.1 modules.tgz 2780 K Linux Kernel Modules modutils.tgz 320 K modutils-2.3.18 pciutils.tgz 230 K Linux PCI utilities pcmcia.tgz 1580 K pcmcia-cs-3.1.20 scsimods.tgz 2330 K SCSI and CD-ROM modules sh_utils.tgz 1270 K GNU sh-utils-2.0 shadow.tgz 1170 K Shadow password suite sndmods.tgz 1360 K Linux sound modules sysvinit.tgz 530 K sysvinit-2.78 init programs tar.tgz 650 K GNU tar 1.13 txtutils.tgz 1330 K GNU textutils-2.0 util.tgz 2670 K util-linux 2.10 unix utils zoneinfo.tgz 1790 K time zone database Extra Applications diff.tgz 200 K GNU diffutils-2.7 groff.tgz 4550 K GNU groff 1.16 text formatting manpages.tgz 1670 K Man-pages 1.24 documents mp3.tgz 350 K MP3 players mpg123 and amp rpm.tgz 2640 K rpm-3.0.2 package manager sox.tgz 190 K universal sound converter texinfo.tgz 1170 K GNU texinfo-4.0 vim.tgz 3970 K Vim 5.6 editor Emacs without X-Windows Support emac_nox.tgz 3600 K Emacs binary without X support emacinfo.tgz 1190 K Emacs online documentation emacmisc.tgz 4400 K Emacs miscellaneous files Networking Support and Applications bind.tgz 3690 K bind-8.2.2-P7 named daemon dip.tgz 190 K DIP - dialup IP handler 3.3.7p ftchmail.tgz 1040 K fetchmail-5.4.0 imapd.tgz 1220 K imapd IMAP4rev1 2000.283 lynx.tgz 1830 K Lynx 2.8.3rel.1 browser mailx.tgz 180 K BSD mailx 8.1.1-10 metamail.tgz 340 K metamail-2.7 MIME extensions netmods.tgz 3390 K Network support modules netpipes.tgz 210 K netpipes shell streams ppp.tgz 500 K PPP for Linux 2.3.11 procmail.tgz 290 K procmail 3.15 mail system sendmail.tgz 2230 K sendmail 8.11.0 smailcfg.tgz 770 K sendmail config files tcpip1.tgz 2530 K TCP/IP networking programs tcpip2.tgz 3310 K TCP/IP networking programs I still need to add VM mail, ViaVoice TTS, Emacspeak, and blackdown Java but I have tons of space left on microdrive. -- Doug -- Subscription/unsubscription/info requests: send e-mail with subject of "subscribe", "unsubscribe", or "info" toWear-Hard Mailing List Archive (searchable): http://wearables.blu.org please, Please, *PLEASE* don't subscribe through a forward/false domain
