Perhaps it is even something as simple as a faulty connector. I have had loads of problems with ribbon cables where some pin will be jostled and then refuse to work. Problems with this are generally hard for me to detect, and so I spend hours looking for a more complex problem, but when I simply move it to another cable...magic!
