Re: Wireless links

I did some searches on ricochet peer-to-peer. As I said I couldn't
get it to work. However, the following are interesting references.

This web page says "Ricochet also states that their modems can, in the
absence of a local mini-cell, communicate on a peer-to-peer basis."
http://earthops.org/internet_future.html

I found a Ricochet modem guide. It does indicate that peer-to-peer
is possible, and that it should work over 1/4 mile range. This guide
does indicate exactly what Nick said, that you use the ATDT command
with the serial number of the modem.

This faq says that the peer-to-peer range is 1000-1500 feet.

But as I said a friend and I tried this with no success outside of the
coverage area. Perhaps we were doing something wrong or had some probs
with our configuration. If anyone has got this working, please let us
know.

I have two ricochet modems here. One is the old SX 56k modem and one
is the new 128kb model. I also live in the mountains, one of the few
places in the SF bay area that doesn't have ricochet coverage. This
has always bothered me re wearables, if I was in ricochet territory
at home I would just stay on ricochet all the time. Since I have two
modems here I will try this peer-to-peer dialup once again and see if
I can get it to work. If it does, that would be great, I could plug
one into my server with frame relay connection to the net and then
I could use the same modem for local and roaming. That is, unless
ricochet shuts down this summer. Anyone have any more news on that?
I'm gonna be really PO if I lose my ricochet connection!
