How much serial port signalling do you need to do? If it's
single-directional, you don't need a max232, you can just use a resistor
and transistor to tie the tx line to either the idle rx line or to the
high rts line.  I have a serial keypad that does this already, see
http://rightsock.com/~kjw/Wearables/SerialKeypad/

Bi Directional probably won't work.

I'm also not sure how much power a max232 would draw. I'd suspect it's
too much for a serial port, but that's just my guess.
