After mucking around with MAX232 and external capacitors, I now use
the Dallas Semiconductor DS275 level converters. These are small
(8-pin DIP) and do NOT require external capacitors. They are only
one pair of RX/TX though, unlike the MAX232CPE wich can either do
a full serial port (with DSR/CSR/DTE/etc) or two pairs of RX/TX.
They work great and are much smaller, the IC is half the size of
the MAX232CPE and like I said no external caps.
