I'm still a bit fuzzy on what the question was. If you want to power the 
PIC and the MAX232 from a PC serial port, it should be doable. But the 
voltages will be somewhere around 10-12 volts, so you need regulation.

Have fun debugging them assembly routines. I will never forget doing 
long division on 370 assembler.
