Starmode can be used off the network.  Usually, you change the network
number in area where you co-exist with Metricom pole top routers.

The limitation of using starmode off the network is that you have to be able
to hail and be acquired by another metricom subscriber radio placed in star
mode and attached to a host running the star mode application.

Depending on the clutter (houses, buildings, trees, etc) and the terrain,
Line of Sight (LOS) is the preferred MOS.
