As I mentioned a short time ago, I ordered several items from Edmund
Optics. I have been playing with them and here are some initial
conclusions:

(dia x EFL)

9x9
Very nice, but too small to see the whole Kopin cyberdisplay screen
through. If there was such a thing as a 12x9 lens, I could make the
display entirely inline in glasses! By that I mean no mirror needed -
just a backlight LED, a diffuser sheet, the Kopin display, then the lens.
Total depth probably about 2cm. However, a display would have to be tiny
indeed to be visible through the small 9mm lens.

9x18
Almost right. I made a very tiny prototype covert display using this and
the beam splitter. Unfortunately, the edges of the display (left and
right edges) are blurry - this is due to the kopin display being
rectangular and the lens being circular. It's just big enough vertically
but not horizontally.

12x18
I will be using this one for my next prototype. It looks promising. I am
hoping the extra 3mm of diameter does the trick.

50% Beam Splitter
This thing is cooler than cool. I framed it very carefully with thin
copper wire and epoxy, and attached it via two more copper wires to the
lens assembly on the original prototype. This allowed me to adjust it
easily. It easily creates a transparent display - and when the display is
off, you can easily see through it.

I'll let you all know what my luck is with the 12x18 lens and the kopin.
The Beam Splitter is - to me - now a definate must-have item for any HMD
hacking.

If anyone gets bored with a hacked Cy-Visor, let me know and I'll see
about buying it off you and try hacking it. 800x600 color, transparent
covert display is soon - I can just feel it.

PS - I also experimented with the glasstron lens (PLM-A35). I took my
spare one and tried it with the kopin display (like Cliff's covert M1).
It was easy to focus and use, but the large size of the lens (compared to
the M1's display size) bothered me. So I took the grinder to the plastic
glasstron lens and shaved away quite a lot.

The glasstron lens is now about the size of a quarter (looking at it
head on) and still displays the kopin perfectly. May be of interest to
those messing with it. I'll try to have pictures up sometime.
