There is an upcoming wearable computing exhibit at Gallery TPW,
in Toronto, 80 Spadina Avenue, Suite 310.
The opening reception is Thurs. July 5th, at 7:00pm.
The exhibit explores wearable computing over the past 20 years,
and includes what many consider to be the world's first true
wearable computer, along with some recent systems, including
the first covert (normal looking) fully functional wearable computer
system with laser eyetap camera and aremac.
A large community of Toronto area "cyborgs" will also be present at
the opening.
An element of the exhibit includes some social commentary on the
way in which building owners and some countries process people
and so there is a kind of satire element to the exhibit.
This includes the "Nowear to hide" facility in which all cellphones,
pagers, PDAs, laptop computers, and of course "wearables" (e.g.
clothing, jewelery, etc.) must be left outside.
See http://wearcam.org/tpw.htm
Those who understood SeatSale (http://wearcam.org/seatsale/index.htm)
in which privacy was violated through scanning of a credit card to download
a "license to sit", will understand this new exhibit ("Decontamination
Facility Garden") as essentially the same thing, but much worse
(or better, in terms of satire/commentary). Instead of being required
to swipe a credit card, one is required to remove all clothing jewelry,
and personal effects, including any wearable computers. When free of
such "wearables", one is then allowed to move on through the gallery to
receive a plain white Tyvek uniform. Privacy is protected (of course!!!)
by having separate entrances (and separate decon corridors) for men and
women. The men's entrance is on the left, and the women's entrance on
the right, around a central guard tower.
The central guard tower is online, over a high speed Internet link, so
if you're not in the Toronto area, you can still participate remotely
to help ensure that no wearable computers are permitted into the
gallery space:
