I was admiring the possibilities with Cerf or Bitsy and some microcontrollers, but Intel is blowing my mind with this kit. They are solving most of my problems out of the box. Perhaps those CPLDs can even allow me to do A/V switching. Considering the ideal fictional CPU board that I described recently, Intel is very close. Throw in microdrive, merlin for ricochet, and plug in InViso microdisplay in glasses, and I would be happy for a very long time. Then I could focus on software, that's where things get really interesting. I wonder if the charger can handle large capacity battery packs over SMbus. > I think I'm still going to use one for my first system, but > I may look into working with one of these later on... I think x86 makes sense for getting started. You are up and running instantly and have tons of choices in peripherals, drivers, and apps. The above is likely fairly raw, in other words don't expect everything to work out of the box. This is just hardwear, presumably tons of drivers and apps need to be written to make it fly, er walk. > One thing to note, however, is that this setup won't come cheap... > I poked at a couple of the listed distributors, and the only one > who gave any pricing info on line at all wanted $2600 for the > companion board kit, and wouldn't even quote a price on the > system board. I was just doing the same, and my initial guess is that the system board is probably $5k or more. So add $2600 and the microdrive and HMD and you are up to $10k. But consider this: my old CardPC system was up into the $6-$7k range.
