With regard to identifying when the current network link is about to be out of range, might it be relevant that Transmeta has a patent on something to do with "fault trapping when expected physical component is not present?" I have no idea of the specifics, but it seems to me it could potentially be part of the development of a system designed for continuous wide coverage. It might only have to do with making the processor more robust across different platforms, though.
