I just bought a Philips Vesta-Pro. It has a compression-chip to do 640x480 at 15fps and averything less at 30fps. Image- quality is the best I have ever seen in a USB-cam (not my firts one). Taken apart it's _much_ smaller that it looks from the outside. I've just taken it apart and am looking for a plug to extend the wiring between the camery and the compression- board (separatable and connected by a small 32pin or so plug) and integrate the camera-board into one ear-piece of my head-set. Only problem for me is finding such a plug (for not having to solder with <1mm accuracy) and building a good-looking case. Just beware of the cheap plastic and the seal at the bottom when taking that one apart. Never screw out the optics! The plastic is so cheap that when screwing it back in you erode the grooves. You can find images, Linux-drivers,... at http://www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/ It has cost me 150DM, thats about 75$. > As far as I can tell, all of these USB webcams are basically > the same. I tried a 3com that a friend of mine installed as a webcam for his shop. You are able to read the text on a monitor filmed that is about 2m away. > There may be small diffrences > in features or image quality between different chipsets, but > they all appear to be pretty much the same.
