So, this thread is a bit off topic, but for those who are interested
here's the /. article about it being illegal to record police:

I think the gist was that in some states, making audio recordings w/o
knowledge/consent was consdiered illegal wiretapping.  I just figure that
by the time I get recording equipment running in my car I can flash [Rec]
on the LED sign in the back window if I manage to get pulled over ;)
