Optics is not just a good idea, it's the law. If you're serious about building
you own HMD optics, you have to hit the books and the websites explaining such
things like chromatic aberration and astigmatism. If you're aiming at immersive
VR, the stakes are higher.

Things become even more difficult if you have to restrict yourself to commercially
available items (optical quality nonparabolic mirrors of high curvature are not
something you'd be able to grind in your garage or get at Edmund Scientific), and
much much more difficult if you think about doing it on a budget. You might talk
to your friendly hobby astronomer. They've been known of using lenses and mirrors,
sometimes.

So once again, save your breath and at least learn the basics of the field
you're talking about before you get your thoughts flying.
