My suggestion is to get your hands on magnifiers - the smaller and the stonger generally the better. Cannabilize some parts like old HMDs (try buying a virtual boy on ebay), things like that. Then it's mostly trial-and-error and that-looks-about-right. Rectangular lenses are what you usually want if you can get them. Start out messing with some loupes and so forth. Or the slide magnifiers that photo people use.
