Why is it so hard to design a rugged carrying method for wearable

From: Freeman Pascal <>

I originally ordered my PCM-5822 from Advantech with the rail enclosure and
the
PS-50 DC-DC power supply with enclosure. I was expecting to be able to use
these two enclosures to mount and carry my wearable hardware.

I am currently carrying my hardware on a web pistol belt using BlackHawk
pouches
to carry my batteries, HMD control unit, and twiddler (when not in my hand).
This
has worked well enough, but it is bulky and draws too much attention
(especially
after Sept 11th - looks too much like a bomb :^/ ).

I've looked at purchasing an Scott eVest, but I'm concerned it wont work for
me and
I'll end up wasting the money. Just how wide, tall, and deep are the inside
pockets?

Doug's soft shell method seems too fragile to me. He's bemoaned the
destruction
of his video connectors in more than one thread. I'm also worried about
cooling,
I don't have a fan and I don't want to shorten the life time of my board by
cooking
the silicon.

Ideally, I'd like to use a solution like MIT's MIThril soft mounting and
zipper the
vest into my other clothing. But, the PCM-5822 is a tad big mount this way
-
especially with the PCMCIA PC-104 adapter mounted on it.

Does anyone have suggestions, advice (pro and con), or comments that may
help
myself and others on the list who are battling with this problem?

-Freeman
