I think the best reason for doing this is the same reason many people have for climbing mountains: because we can. I think the fun is not so much in the end result as it is in getting there. Sure, I can buy a laptop and have a computer pretty much whenever I need one. But that's not quite as fun as having a computer attached to my belt with a see-thru head-mounted display scrolling the latest headlines in front of my eyes.
