I think that the Gadget factor is important here as well. The concept of a covert display is pretty cool and normally only available to people who are willing to shell out big bucks. At the price of some time, I hope to have a covert display for less money than my desktop monitor costs. Also, in putting together the system we learn about the system, about systems in general, and the thought that goes into what part is best and what tradeoffs we're willing to make is fun. I (and my cynical brother) have often wondered why I'm spending so much time and money on a system which is, in some ways, inferior to some off-the-shelf laptops, but I then remember how much FUN I'm having doing this. I don't have any NEED for a wearable, but the coolness factor and the education involved in making it is more than worth the trouble/cost.
