A little off-topic, but I'll post to the list since the subject is clearly labeled. My own feeling about academia is that there are only 2 possible reasons to return: [1] The piece of paper (or, degree) will give you entry to something that you can't get to another way [2] You like the environment, or a specific crowd of folks with whom you would like to interact I personally decided many years ago there is NOTHING I can learn in a classroom better than either "on my own" (the usual path -- especially since this now includes so many wonderful Web sites full of very valuable compiled wisdom and experience!), or by finding a mentor/expert. Most experts love to impart their knowledge -- and if those who don't are teaching, do you really want to be in their classrooms? (-8 Therefore, as you decide how to re-enter the academic world, start at the end, just as you choose a computer by deciding first on its software -- what you want it for. What is your goal? If, for example, you want to join a specific faculty someday -- find out where most of their current faculty received their degrees. See?
