Re: Academic advice...

A little off-topic, but I'll post to the list since the subject is
clearly labeled. My own feeling about academia is that there are only 2
possible reasons to return:

[1] The piece of paper (or, degree) will give you entry to something
that you can't get to another way
[2] You like the environment, or a specific crowd of folks with whom
you would like to interact

I personally decided many years ago there is NOTHING I can learn in a
classroom better than either "on my own" (the usual path -- especially
since this now includes so many wonderful Web sites full of very
valuable compiled wisdom and experience!), or by finding a
mentor/expert. Most experts love to impart their knowledge -- and if
those who don't are teaching, do you really want to be in their
classrooms? (-8

Therefore, as you decide how to re-enter the academic world, start at
the end, just as you choose a computer by deciding first on its
software -- what you want it for. What is your goal? If, for example,
you want to join a specific faculty someday -- find out where most of
their current faculty received their degrees. See?

Cheers --
