Most if not all batteries have safety valves to allow gassified electrolyte to vent outside the battery during high temperature charging. If not allowed to vent, you have a small pressure cooker bomb on your hands. This is why it's a good idea to charge your batteries when they're cool (and why most good battery packs have temperature sensors in them) because the less electrolyte you vent, the longer your battery life.
