Roger,

"Very cool"... took me a while too to light up my
display on my PCM-5864 board, but like you said, a
little tech support and some 2mm IDE cable slicing
works well!

If you are looking for a smaller display, here are two
to choose from, both in the $100 US price range:

http://www.earthlcd.com/sbc.htm

The display is $99, and the "trinket kit" of touch
interface, cabling, etc, is another $100, depending if
you need that or not. There are two displays, the
first being a Panasonic, the second being a Hitachi
which is the same price, but on another page (sorry I
didn't have the link to it handy). Both have a 4-wire
resistive touch film over the LCD surface.

Smaller displays can be had in surplus places as well
as online-auction places. Ya have to hunt. Took me
about 3 months to find a working (and affordable)
Toshiba LTM04c380K 4" true VGA display. Of course I
can't find the necessary FFC/FPC cable for it
anywhere, but thats another story. I found an
inverter for it and the backlight lights up no
problem. So, I'm getting there. I'm using an
advantech SOM-5822 board thats about the size of a
2.5" IDE drive for it.

This stuff is fun, yet frustrating!
