Hi, This project I did was on fleet management & vehicle tracking. Here we were supposed to develop a software, that, from the vehicle side access the GPS data (using any third party GPS receiver), extract the required details from it and than add data from the sensors placed in the vehicle, repackage it (so that it can fit in a single SMS message), and send it to a remote server. The server, then would unpack it and put the data extracted from it into a database. The operator sitting at a terminal(he/she can be far away from the server), will then be able to access these data if he/she provides proper authentication. Foe the server-client interactions we developed our own teeny-weeny protocol that would use the underlying protocol (in out project we used TCP/IP, since it was a simulation. But practically, we should use GSM) to transmit the data. This is all about the project. As I said, since mobiles use cellular technology, you can at any instant of time have access at least three mobile base stations(since base stations keep track of your movements, for ensuring proper call hand over). This, can be used as the basis for triangulation (the same thing what GPS receivers do) and then u can know your location. But this location would be relative to that of the base, stations. If we know the exact lat. & lon. of these base stations, we can easily calculate ours.
