Antenna characteristics (specifically length, but also shape/construction/material etc...) tend to be purpose (or at least frequency) specific. I doubt that the antenna you're looking at will help you with WiFi transmission unless that was it's intended use.

I have however seen some 802.11b PCMCIA cards with sockets for external antennas - maybe one of these with it's associated antenna would be your best bet for an FCC-compliant longer range solution.

I am also aware of several people who have opened up the antenna section of 802.11b PCMCIA cards and retrofitted them with a 1W (yes... 1W) 2.5ghz amplifier chips from Celeritek and others to give them illegal transmission power (but nonetheless excellent results) in peer to peer modes...

I don't know what your application is, but for general in-building use i suspect any improved transmit / recieve benefit you get from a bigger antenna would be insignificant compared to the attenuation by walls and floors. If you are using this outside with line of sight then perhaps the improved range would become more useful.
