multiple keyboard layouts in xfree

Not strictly a wearble question, but does anyone have suggestions on how
to run multiple keyboards with different keymaps on the same xfree86
server?

my wearable core is a vaio u1 subnotebook whose internal keymap is a
jp101. all my external keyboard input devices use standard us101 keymaps.
while the alpha keys are fine, typing symbols on one or the other input
device is an absolute pain.

Last i checked, the keyboard input drivers were still part of the core
server, making it difficult to recognize mutliple keyboards and just
assigning them individual options as one would mice.

Currently i do some keymap switching via macros before i switch input
devices, but was hoping for some suggestions.
