M1 modifications (inverter board?)

I've been looking at people's M1 mod pages for ideas, and some people seem
to have the 'ear board' (the long thin one, i've seen it called the
'inverter board' somewhere, i think Don's pages?) in the main M1 module
case.. is this a mod that tekgear has to do (as in circuitry changes
somewhere, not warranty-wise), or can you just put the board in the case
and use a longer cable between it and the eyepiece? Seems strange that
they would have put a seperate board there if you can just move it to the
case and use a longer cable... Would be really nice to move it to the main
case and use a couple feet of bioflex cable to attach it to the eyepiece.

Thanks in advance,
