We've observed the same thing with various boards and cpus (mainly x86) that systems at POST consume a significant amount more power then at idle after an operating system has been loaded. I have yet to find a good explanation, but I suspect it has something to do with the BIOS being in a busy polling loop. If I remember correctly, some OSs like DOS look very similar. -Paul R.
