I agree with your reasoning.  I have a sim setup with lead-acid
batteries, a 18V power supply, and several diodes.  The batteries
actually have their own charging circuit that is fed from the 18V when
attached.  Each batt has 3 wires running to it (+18v for charge (when
plugged in), vout, and ground), this allows using any type of battery
chemistry, as the batts plugin, and are smart enough to charge
themselves.

BTW the 12V lead acid batteries use a small switcher (mc 34063- approx.
1A, adjustable. for 12V lead should equal approx. 14.5v)
