After a failed drop test (2ft to rug, the shortest fall with the softest landing yet in the past 6 months), the 1.8" hard drive in my laptop/wearable is finally starting to call it quits. so it's time to start looking for a permanent replacement. back in october, i thought i had seen pricing on sdd.toshiba.com for the drives alone and as a developers kit. looking around today didn't turn up much in that direction. there doesn't seem to be any vendors carrying the drive on it's own. there are a few products which look like they could make for good (if not pricey) drive donors: apple ipod ($500 for 20gb) smartdisk firefly ($400 for 20gb) lacie data bank ($300 for 20gb) each has it's benefits, the lacie being the cheapest and dual 1394/usb, the ipod being the only one i've confirmed with a matching drive. considering these are the only 1.8" drive products i've come across, and they come in the standard 5/10/20gb variants, i think it's safe to say all should work fine. does anyone on the list have pointers on obtaining a spare drive in small quantities (1-3), preferably the 20gb model? perhaps toshiba has announced a larger capacity drive which should be out soon, or another manufacturer making 1.8" drives? and if any of you have a broken ipod (i've heard apple warranty repair is expensive) you want to unload for a fair price... :) --francois -- Subscription/unsubscription/info requests: send e-mail with subject of "subscribe", "unsubscribe", or "info" toWear-Hard Mailing List Archive (searchable): http://wearables.blu.org Please, *PLEASE* don't subscribe through a forward/expander/false domain
