Power management has been another interesting topic
here. It's been a while since I looked at drive spin
down issues with Linux. But here was my experience -
Although many batteries are "smart" monitoring their
own current capacity, few manufacturers (if any) have
shared how to extract that information. Although not
the most accurate for knowing the actually capacity
left, I opted for voltage monitoring because it's
fairly simple. There are a couple options for voltage
monitoring - I2C chips (which actually have several
different kind of sensors and are communicated with
through a chip designed to interface with the serial
port). I actually found a "starter board" from a data
acquisition company for $15 with 4 analog and 2
digital lines. Unfortunately they no longer sell this
board. The main issue is to find system hardware that
uses very little power. I highly recommend that you
look at wearforge.perilith.com for info. Many of us
have posted ideas and techniques there.

I'm going to be making my cables soon. Garmin sells
their stuff proprietarily.. so it costs an arm and a
leg. I found a group of people that sell Garming
connectors - I bought 2 for $15. I bit high for a
piece of plastic and metal tabs - but a LOT cheaper
than garmin's price.
