I thought it could be useful if I tell you what my system will be made of as I will have to rely on off the shelf parts as I've got no hw hacking skills at the moment. Some of these parts are pretty spendy... I'd been saving up for a lightweight laptop until I decided just to build my own and then discovered wearables. CPU module: Lippert Cool RoadRunnerII http://www.emjembedded.com/products/single/coolroadr.html With 256mb ram and cable set - $700 cardbus module (yet to purchase) http://www.advantech.com/estore/products/model.asp?Category_ID=1-9B19R&ct=EC $152 Display: Micro-optical SV3 http://www.microopticalcorp.com/products.html $999 Storage: As much flash as I can afford (probably 512mb). I will mostly run off of this because a HD is too fragile. What happens the first time I have to run while I am wearing it? I do however have a 30G laptop drive that I will use on special occasions when I need more storage. I will also have a wifi card and GPS attached. > with my current input/output hardware (keyboard/crt). Then I will get > the twiddler so I can practice input.. then last purchase the monocular. My input device will be the Twiddler1, because it was free. I have unfortunately had a lot of difficulty getting the user space drivers to work. (Any ideas?) I just can't afford a Twiddler2 after buying the other stuff. I've also seen other ideas for more ergonomic input devices, but that comes when I am done with the rest. Alternate input devices for when I am not walking about: USB flexible kb http://store.yahoo.com/grandtec/minivikusb.html got it for $26 off ebay USB optical mini-mouse, Kensington. $20 at CompUSA > My other question revolves around the power supply. A couple weekends ago I decided to go through every relevant thread in the list archive (http://wearables.blu.org/news.html - invaluable), got halfway through when I found this page: http://www.maxim-ic.com/evkit.cfm/pline_id/9 Most of those aren't appropriate of course. I found these to look promising so far and are complete, minus case. Have no idea about cost or form factor: http://www.maxim-ic.com/quick_view2.cfm/qv_pk/2415 http://www.maxim-ic.com/quick_view2.cfm/qv_pk/1680 http://www.maxim-ic.com/quick_view2.cfm/qv_pk/3562 And of course there's the datel IC, and all the other good ideas that have been posted here. I am still keeping an eye out for how I will hw monitor this and how to secure the batteries, and all in a form factor that can be put in a pocket. Sometimes I think I am asking the impossible. :) I am figuring on using camcorder batteries, as the charger is easy to come by. Although the CRRII doesn't officially require a fan, I've realized it will require one when running in a case. I hope to find a fan that runs adequately on 5v and perhaps have the case be made out of metal or something. I haven't gotten to this stage yet. I want this machine to be able to be put in a variety of things, like you might with a cdplayer or walkman. Pockets when it's cold out, fanny pack during summer, or perhaps something like this http://www.eholster.com/e-holster/euro.html . Hope this helps. -- ~phoo~ May the Google be with you. -- Subscription/unsubscription/info requests: send e-mail with subject of "subscribe", "unsubscribe", or "info" toWear-Hard Mailing List Archive (searchable): http://wearables.blu.org Please, *PLEASE* don't subscribe through a forward/expander/false domain
